king: The chief chess piece that, when captured, the opponent automatically wins the game. It can only move one square, horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Under special circumstances, it can move more squares to do a special maneuver known as castling.

knight: A chess piece that can move in an L-shape, either two spaces horizontally and one space vertically, or vice versa. They are the only chess piece that can “jump” over other chess pieces.

middlegame: The developed phase in the chess game that follows the opening. More pieces are in play during the middlegame.

opening: The first 10 to 25 moves of a chess game during which players develop their armies and set up the stage for the coming battle.
